Skandia Fastigheter are choosing circular flowerpots

Managing real estate and office space is a big part of what Skandia Fastigheter does for their customers. When their own office needed to change, they decided to undergo a sustainable remodeling. All choices should be thought through and have as low climate impact as possible yet be good looking and inspiring. One part of it was choosing circular flowerpots from OneLoop by Stora Enso.

At Skandia Fastigheter’s newly renovated office in Stockholm you will find designer flowerpots. If you take a closer look and read the note attached to a pot, you will notice they are also circular. The pots are 3D printed and made from biocomposites: a material that can be used over and over again. At the end of their life cycle, they can be re-processed into new designs, extending the life of the material used to minimize waste.

The flowerpots come from OneLoop by Stora Enso and are a part of creating “the office of the future”, a project renovating the premises at Skandia Fastigheter. But one thing that differs from an average remodeling project is that all the “new” furniture are old. They are either second-hand or reused in some way. This is in line with the total renovation where all updates are done to be as climate friendly as possible.

A sustainable renovation with recycling and climate-smart choices

Skandia Fastigheter – Skandia Properties in English – is a company that owns, develops and manages office space, homes, shopping centers and public use properties in Sweden.

Now it was time to improve their own head office. Because in the last few years what is required of the physical office at Skandia Fastigheter has changed. For example, they now need social spaces for employees to come together and smaller rooms for focused work or video meetings.

They decided to do a total make-over of the office, with a strong dedication to recycling and climate-smart choices while still making the interior feel new and modern. They wanted their own office to become a showroom to demonstrate that this is possible.

Fixing up furniture and using waste-material – OneLoop: a perfect fit

The project has now come to an end with a great turn-out: 350 old furniture have been freshened up and fixed if they were torn, and another 203 have been bought from secondhand outlets. Most items in the office also have a note attached, shortly explaining its history. When they couldn’t find what they needed through re usage, it was important to find a solution with a low climate impact. For example, the fabrics for fixing up old chairs comes from recycled nylon.

The pots from OneLoop are a good fit as they consist to 50% of recycled material.

“We were so happy when we found these pots because they are spot on and works perfect with our concept – a product that is made from waste-material and part of a circular system!” says Sara Eriksson, responsible Project Manager, Skandia Fastigheter.

“The pots were created just for us, making them feel new and fresh. At the same time the material used is partly recycled and if we would ever like to change them, they can be made into new designs.” says Taiga Koponen responsible architect and founding partner at Koponen Stenqvist.
